-Ken Schrader (25) earned the pole but had to start at the rear of the feild for switching to a backup car.
-2 Camera cars driven by Bobby Hamilton (51 Mello Yello) and Tommy Ellis (18 Hardee's) were added to the tail of the field to film scenes for Days of Thunder. They were not scored and retired after 40 laps.
-Hut Stricklin (68) crashed his car during the 125 but qualified for the 500. He had no backup car, and leased one from Hendrick Motorsports for Sunday's race.
-AJ Foyt (14) dropped out of the race because a new helmet he was using had a strong glue smell that was bothering him.
-Dick Bahre brought a car to attempt the Daytona 500, but let Slick Johnson borrow the car for the ARCA race as he wrecked his only car during practice. Johnson was killed in the ARCA race and as Bahre had no more cars to enter the 500, he withdrew.
