-Bill Elliott suffered bruised ribs and broken wrist in a practice crash. He elected to drive this race, but would have Jody Ridley replace him in the Daytona 500. The crash was caused by a tire failure which caused most teams to swith to Hoosier at Daytona.
-Rick Mast was selected as a "Wildcard Draw." His name was drawn from all drivers who were runner up pole in 1988. Mast only had one 2nd pole qualifying position from 1988, subbing for Buddy Baker at the Southern 500.
